Music Therapy With Seniors

Assisted or Independent Living:
Maxine offers Music Therapy group and individual sessions. In the assisted or independent living environments Music Therapy offers participants an opportunity to socialize and express their feelings. Music Therapy activities also offer seniors opportunities to learn skills and try new instruments. There are studies that show that learning new skills keeps your brain functioning at a higher level than if you did not have these opportunities ( The Brain That Changes Itself, Doidge ). Music is a joyful experience for most seniors and gives them a chance to reminisce by singing old familiar songs.
Individual sessions: There are always some seniors who stay in their rooms and do not participate in facility events. For these people, a visit to their rooms with the offer of songs often brings them great joy. In addition, many people then choose to join the music group increasing their social contact and positive experiences.

Extended Care/ Long Term and intermediate Care Facilities:
Music Therapy has been used extensively and successfully in long term care facilities. Maxine has years of experience working with clients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s (All stages), Other Dementia’s, Stroke Survivors, and Palliative Care. Music Therapy is often the only way for people suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer’s to communicate and respond clearly through the use of familiar songs . Music Therapy activities are geared to their individual needs. Music Therapy also offers opportunities for expressing feelings through songs and activities so that participants may release tension and stress. Music Therapy is also used for family visits to increase positive interactions among family members.
Entertainment For Seniors:
Maxine offers musical entertainment for seniors in facilities, malls, festivals, and private parties.
